A Week With the Mac Mini

What a fantastic invention. After a week with the Mac mini, I can say I'm incredibly satisfied. The silence alone is almost worth it. I feel like I've reclaimed my sound environment (soon to be followed by my floor space). The mini is so quiet, in fact, that I actually mistakenly thought it was asleep for several hours today.

It's hard for me to judge performance relative to a high-end dual G5, but it's certainly a lot faster than the G4/733 I was using before. Startup is incredibly quick.

The one thing that threw me off initially was a "kick stand" sound that can periodically be heard. I did some reading and found out this is due to the laptop-style hard drive, which regularly parks its heads to avoid damage in the event of a fall.

The interesting thing to me is that there's no gimmick about the mini. It just does what it sets out to do. I'm amazed by all the possibilities that are packed into this tiny little box.

Yes, this little box has gotten a lot of attention recently. And I must admit, the price tag does sound very attractive. Coming from a strictly Windows environment, I'm excited to finally get my hands on one of these, maybe even sooner than later!
