OpenStep: 10 Years
OpenStep, the precursor to Cocoa, was born 10 years ago yesterday. A lot of the things that make Cocoa great and that we take for granted today exist because of OpenStep. For that matter, since Sun based Java on OpenStep, Microsoft based .Net on Java, and Mono is based .Net, many modern object-oriented programming platforms efforts owe their very existence to OpenStep.
And even beyond such direct influence, the fundamental design patterns seen in OpenStep and WebObjects have proliferated throughout the industry in various forms. For that matter, the first web browser was created using Next development tools. Next's influence is greatly underestimated by the mainstream computing community.
